Winter sun in December with the family? Djerba, in a private villa

Secluded pool and white arches at Villa Jade, Ethic Village Djerba: winter sun in December for families

Where can you find winter sun in December when the whole family is finally on holiday at the same time, without a long-haul flight? Djerba is a short-haul answer: about three and a half hours direct from Manchester, with bright, mild days. It’s winter sun, not summer, and we’d rather say so from the first line. What you gain is time together — parents, children and sometimes grandparents — in a private villa where no one can see in.

At Ethic Village Djerba, a private, alcohol-free family residence, we have welcomed families from France looking for exactly this at the end of the year since 2022. This year, families from Belgium and the UK have already booked their dates. Here is what we tell them when they ask whether December is worth the trip.

Djerba in December: the real climate, with no promise of summer

December in Djerba is late autumn, Mediterranean-style: often sunny but shorter days, pleasant afternoons on the terrace, and cool evenings when you’ll want a jumper. The sea, though, turns too cool for most swimmers, and the odd windy or rainy day can turn up. For a rough idea in numbers, the published climate averages for Djerba give December highs of around 17–18°C and a sea temperature of around 18°C. Our page on Djerba weather in December goes into temperatures, the sea and rainfall in detail.

Where to go for winter sun in December: Djerba or further afield?

If swimming in the sea in December is your top priority, you’ll need to look further afield, usually with a longer flight and sometimes a time difference that unsettles the children. If what you want is sunshine, calm and real family time without travel fatigue, Djerba makes a good case: a short direct flight, just one hour ahead of the UK in winter, and an island on a human scale that you can explore at an easy pace.

For swimming, one villa is the exception: Villa Diamant has a heated pool, available as an extra at €20 a day. The other pools are not heated. The bravest children love them anyway; everyone else enjoys the sun loungers.

A year-end together, away from the crowds and not overlooked

At the end of the year, what you want is to be together, not surrounded. Our 4 single-storey villas were designed with that in mind:

  • A pool that isn’t overlooked in every villa, shielded by high perimeter walls lined with privacy screens.
  • A serving hatch: meals prepared by the residence kitchen reach your villa without anyone stepping inside.
  • Connecting villas if two families travel together: Diamant with Saphir, Opale with Jade.
  • A live-in caretaker, who lives with his family at the heart of the residence, and covered parking within the grounds.
  • Two 5G routers on two different networks for the Wi-Fi, and a generator that backs up the whole villa: winter in Djerba sometimes brings power cuts, so it’s worth knowing before you come.

Bringing three generations together under one roof for a week is a joy we learned from our parents, and one we love to see our guests share.

Every villa has prayer mats, and the Qibla direction is marked in every room. Troujette Mosque is a 5 min walk away, and Khalid Ibn Al Walid Mosque 10 min. Ethic Village Djerba welcomes families and married couples; unmarried couples and mixed groups are not accepted.

Your December days, in practice

Breakfast is included and arrives through the serving hatch. The welcome dinner on your arrival evening is included too, as is cleaning on arrival and departure. For lunch or dinner, you choose the day before, by 8 pm: half board at €12 a day per adult (extra; children pay 50% of the adult rate) or à la carte dishes, cooked by our cook with fresh produce. Extra cleaning can be booked at €10 an hour, as an option.

December suits the outings that summer makes hard work. Our trusted partners, available to our guests only, offer these activities as extras through the guest portal:

  • a horse-drawn carriage ride, €40 per carriage;
  • an island tour with a driver-guide, €50 per outing;
  • a private boat trip, €150 per outing, weather permitting;
  • a private excursion to the south, €200 per group.

On greyer days, you can hire a projector for family film nights, at extra cost. And Houmt Souk, a 29 min drive away, is lovely to wander on foot on a fine winter morning.

What a year-end in Djerba costs

December is low season at Ethic Village Djerba. Villa Jade starts at €110 a night, and the rate drops the longer you stay: €100 a night from one week. For Villa Diamant and its heatable pool, allow €115 a night for a week. Rates for every villa are on our villas page.

As for flights, a direct return from Manchester outside the UK school holidays was selling at between €140 and €210 per adult when we last checked, in summer 2026. Over the year-end school holidays, fares climb, so book early. We don’t know the exact fares for those weeks, and we’d rather not guess.

Getting here from the UK

From Manchester, easyJet flies direct to Djerba throughout the winter season, every Saturday and, in many weeks, on Tuesdays too, in about 3 hours 35 minutes. From London Luton, the route runs in windows across the winter, and no December dates were on sale when we last checked: check yours before you plan around it. Djerba is one hour ahead of the UK in winter. Personally, I fly Nouvelair several times a month and recommend it; I strongly advise against Tunisair. On arrival, the airport is a 39 min drive from the residence: we arrange a private transfer at €10 per adult, per trip (minimum €20 per trip), with flight tracking, or a hire car delivered to your villa from €30 per day. Everything is in our guide on how to get to Djerba.

If you’re still weighing up when to go, our guide to Djerba in autumn and winter compares the low-season months, and our article on Djerba in February covers the end of winter.

Winter sun at the end of the year doesn’t mean crossing the globe. Choose your villa and check your year-end dates on our villas page. A question before you book? Message us on WhatsApp at +216 53 478 953. Insha’Allah, see you soon.
