Off-season Djerba: an island that reveals itself
While high season (June-August) attracts families for its beaches, Djerba has much to offer the rest of the year. Autumn, winter and early spring reveal a more authentic, peaceful and still sunny island — often more enjoyable than mid-summer. At Ethic Village Djerba, our most loyal travellers often come in October, December or March, for the calm, the light and a softer price.

Why choose Djerba off-season
Three concrete reasons come up again and again: the climate stays mild, the island can be experienced without crowds, and prices are significantly more accessible. Djerba enjoys around 300 sunny days a year; even in January, clear blue days are the rule rather than the exception. Souks return to their local rhythm, roads clear up, and the Tunisian welcome feels even calmer when teams are no longer in continuous flow. See also long-term climate averages for Djerba.
Autumn in Djerba (September, October, November)
September — back-to-school without the crowds
Early September extends summer gently: 28-30°C during the day, sea at 25-26°C, but families on holiday have gone home. Beaches find a calmer rhythm from the second week. It’s an ideal window for couples, remote workers and retirees who still want to swim without the density of July-August.
October — the favourite month for many
October is often cited by our travellers as the best month of the year in Djerba. Air between 25 and 28°C, sea still warm at 24-25°C, golden light, olive groves preparing for harvest. Excursions — with family, by bike or by boat — become a pleasure without fatigue. It’s also one of the few months when you can still fully enjoy the pool without heating.
November — Mediterranean mildness
In November, temperatures range between 20 and 22°C during the day and 13-15°C at night. The sea cools down (around 20°C), but the air stays soft and the light beautiful. It’s a perfect month for cultural visits: the Ghriba synagogue, Djerbahood in Erriadh, the souks of Houmt Souk, the pottery workshops of Guellala. And for birdwatchers, flamingos arrive in numbers in the lagoon. For more detail, see Ramsar wetland site for Djerba (protected wildlife).

Winter in Djerba (December, January, February)
A mild winter, not a northern one
Djerbian winter has nothing in common with European winter. Days hover around 18-20°C, with cool nights around 10-13°C. Rainfall stays rare and brief. For a traveller escaping grey Paris or Brussels, it’s a real change of scenery: sunshine, blue sky, beautiful low-angle light on olive groves and deserted beaches.
December and January — the sunny getaway
December and January are the mildest months in southern Europe. As soon as the sun comes out, you can have lunch on the terrace. The beaches of Sidi Yati (6 minutes by car from Tezdaine) are completely empty — you can walk for hours without crossing anyone. It’s also the perfect season to settle in, read, cook quietly and let the children play in the garden, far from the summer buzz.
Long-stay wintering
More and more European retirees choose Djerba for a long-duration stay (4 to 12 weeks) between December and February. The mild climate, accessible healthcare, reasonable cost of living and absence of jet lag make it a serious alternative to the Costa del Sol or Portugal. Among our returning travellers, a rhythm sets in: every winter, same villa, same neighbourhood, almost the feeling of being neighbours.
Early spring (March, April)
March marks renewal: mimosas in bloom, almond trees budding, days between 18 and 22°C. April confirms it: 22-25°C, sea warming up, and a fully available island. It’s the perfect moment for honeymoon couples, getaways with friends, or a first discovery trip before the real hot season. May-June remains the most balanced period, but March-April offers the same mildness at an even more accessible rate.

- Couples — total privacy, pool with no overlooking neighbours, calm to reconnect — villa Jade, two bedrooms and a secluded garden, designed for a couple

A Muslim-friendly setting, year-round
Djerba naturally offers halal local cuisine, but most hotels serve alcohol and do not provide the privacy of a home. Ethic Village Djerba positions itself differently: pool with no overlooking neighbours, strictly alcohol-free residence (house rules, no exception), halal meals, four private villas in the sought-after Tezdaine neighbourhood (Les palmiers in Berber) in Midoun. Muslim-friendly is not a marketing label here, it’s a concrete commitment — and it feels all the more so off-season, when everything is calm.

To wrap up
Off-season Djerba is the island the locals themselves prefer: fewer people, mild climate, beautiful light, more accessible rates. Whether you choose October for a still-warm sea, December to escape the grey, or March for the mimosas, you’ll find a more sincere Djerba. And if your trip also seeks privacy, a peaceful setting and respected values, our private family residence welcomes you discreetly. Insha’Allah, see you soon in Tezdaine.
