Sidi Yati Beach in Djerba: Practical Guide

Djerba is renowned for its beaches, and rightly so. But among all the beaches on the island, Sidi Yati Beach in Djerba holds a special place: less known to passing tourists, it is nevertheless one of the most beautiful and pleasant beaches on the island — and one of the favourites of Midoun locals. Here is everything you need to know before visiting.

Overview: a beach to discover

Sidi Yati is a beach on the east coast of Djerba, part of the long stretch of fine sand that has made the island famous. It takes its name from a man held to have been pious — a whitewashed Sufi mausoleum dedicated to him — visible from the shore, may Allah preserve us from any form of association. These mausoleums dot the whole island and are part of Djerba’s heritage.

The beach stands out for being much less crowded than those of the Aghir hotel zone. The water is shallow over a long distance, making it particularly well-suited to families with young children. The sand is light and fine, and the beach has been spared the concrete that fills some tourist zones nearby.

For visitors staying in the Midoun area, this is the go-to beach — reachable in minutes, without crossing the whole island.

How to reach Sidi Yati Beach in Djerba

From Midoun

From the centre of Midoun, Sidi Yati is about a 10-minute drive away. Head towards the east coast and follow the signs to Aghir or the sea — the road then runs along the shore and leads directly to the beach. A small car park is available nearby.

What you need to know before coming

Water quality

The water at Sidi Yati is generally clear and clean, typical of Djerba’s east coast, which benefits from good circulation of Mediterranean waters. The sea is calm most of the time, with a sandy bottom and a gentle entry into the water.

Amenities

Sidi Yati has stayed largely natural, without heavy tourist infrastructure. You will not find endless rows of paid sun loungers. Still, some facilities are available in season: umbrella and sun lounger rentals, as well as simple cafés or restaurants nearby. Remember to bring your own towels, sunscreen, and water — especially outside the high season.

Like all public beaches in Djerba, Sidi Yati is a mixed beach where people swim in regular swimwear — for quieter family bathing, you have two options:

  • the private pool of your villa with no overlooking neighbours
  • an early-morning swim in the sea

Best time to go

The swimming season in Djerba runs from May to October. July and August bring the warmest temperatures (sea at 26–28°C), but the beach is also busier. In May, June, September and October, you will enjoy a very pleasant sea with far fewer swimmers — this is often the preferred period for regulars.

Outside the swimming season, the beach remains lovely for a walk, but the water can feel cool for bathing. To go further, read our article May and June in Djerba: The Best Time for a Private Villa.

Crowds by season

  • July–August: busy beach, especially at weekends and in the middle of the day. Arrive early in the morning to find a good spot.
  • June and September: very pleasant, quiet beach on weekdays.
  • May and October: few people, ideal for families who want the beach to themselves.
  • Off-season: near-empty beach, beautiful for walkers, cool for bathers.

Activities on and around the beach

Swimming and relaxing

The main activity remains swimming. The shallow water over the first few metres is perfect for children. For swimmers, the beach offers plenty of space to venture further out without issue.

Coastal walks

Sidi Yati sits on a continuous stretch of coastline that you can follow on foot to the north or the south. A late-afternoon walk is well worth it: the light shifts, the sea turns copper, and the beach empties out.

Nearby restaurants and cafés

A handful of eating spots can be found close to the beach. For a more elaborate meal, the centre of Midoun — only minutes away — offers a wider choice of local restaurants, ideal for discovering authentic Tunisian cuisine: grilled fish, couscous, brik à l’œuf (a deep-fried filo parcel with egg).

Other beaches near Midoun

If you are staying in the Midoun area, Sidi Yati is not the only option. Other beaches are well worth a visit:

  • Seguia: a beach a little further north, even quieter and mostly frequented by locals. A good pick if you want somewhere wilder and less visited.
  • Sidi Mahrez: on the north of the island, this beach is famous for its turquoise, shallow waters. A little further from Midoun (20 minutes away), but well worth the trip.
  • Aghir hotel zone: towards Aghir, the long beaches of the hotel zone have umbrellas, water sports and restaurants, but they are much more crowded.
