Lawns are beautiful. Green, soft underfoot, the dream of any Mediterranean garden. But in Djerba, where water is precious and the sun relentless, a fair question arises: is it really reasonable?
At Ethic Village Djerba, we made a deliberate choice: natural grass in our gardens. But with a responsible approach that respects both the environment and the value we place on careful stewardship of resources.

The challenges of grass in Djerba
| Challenge | Our approach |
|---|---|
| Water consumption | Drip irrigation + reuse of dechlorinated pool water |
| Summer heat (35-40°C) | Mediterranean-adapted grass variety |
| Maintenance | Dedicated gardener, regular mowing, natural fertilisers (no chemical pesticides) |
| Cost | A deliberate investment — our families’ comfort justifies it |
Why we do it anyway
Because our families come with children. And a child running barefoot on grass beside a private pool with zero overlooking, in a walled garden — that is a moment of simple joy worth every litre of water. The lawn is part of the Ethic Village Djerba experience: a green setting that contrasts with the island’s aridity and brings a genuine feeling of freshness.

Our eco-responsible approach
Lawns use water — that is a fact. But we have put concrete measures in place to minimise the impact:
- Pool water recovery — dechlorinated water is reused for garden irrigation
- Timed irrigation — outside peak heat hours, to limit evaporation
- No chemical pesticides — natural fertilisers only
- Solar energy — for pool water heating
Every resource has value. We do not waste — we steward.
