Most Beautiful Beaches of Djerba: Our Selection

Coucher de soleil sur la plage | Djerba

Why Djerba is famous for its beaches

Djerba has nearly 80 km of coastline, fine sand stretching as far as the eye can see, and warm, shallow waters for much of the year. From Sidi Mahrez in the north to Aghir in the east and the wild tip of Ras Rmel, each beach has its own character. Families, quiet-seekers, birdwatchers — there’s a shore for every taste, usually less than 20 minutes by car from Tezdaine (Midoun), where Ethic Village Djerba is located. For more detail, see Tunisian National Tourist Office (ONTT).

Sidi Yati — often cited as the most beautiful

Located on the east coast of the island, on the Midoun side, Sidi Yati is regularly described as Djerba’s most beautiful beach. Pale sand, water shallow for tens of metres out, a family atmosphere — this is where you come for long walks, for kids to play without worry, for an early-morning picnic. Natural shade is scarce: bring a parasol and a hat. From Ethic Village Djerba, Sidi Yati is about 6 minutes by car. For a full overview, see our practical guide to Sidi Yati beach.

Seguia — quiet and wild

On the north-east coast, Seguia has a more intimate feel. Less frequented, less developed, it appeals to travellers looking for peace and a direct contact with nature. The sand is fine, the water a clear blue, and you’re more likely to meet a local fisherman than a crowd. Best visited in late afternoon, when the light turns the low dunes golden.

Sidi Mahrez — turquoise and child-friendly

On the north coast, Sidi Mahrez is one of the island’s best-known beaches. The water is turquoise and very shallow for a long distance — a delight for young children. The fine white sand stretches for several kilometres. It’s also bordered by a handful of large hotels, so it gets relatively busy in high season; walk a few hundred metres from the main entry points and you’ll find space again.

Aghir — the equipped tourist zone

On the east coast, Aghir is the heart of Djerba’s tourist zone: sun loungers, beach restaurants, water sports clubs. It’s the right choice if you enjoy a lively atmosphere and organised activities without having to plan everything yourself. The trade-off: it’s often the busiest beach. For a day with children who want kayaking, paddle-boarding or a banana-boat ride, Aghir is a convenient base.

Ras Rmel — pink flamingos

The north-western tip of Djerba, Ras Rmel, is the nature-beach par excellence. Reached on foot or by small boat, it’s a regular sighting spot for pink flamingos, herons and migratory birds, especially in spring and autumn. The walk along the sandbank, surrounded by turquoise water, is a rare experience — no loungers, no music, just wind and birds. Bring water and sturdy walking shoes.

Lesser-known beaches — Bin el Ouediane, Taguermess

For something off the main trail, two addresses to remember. The Bin el Ouediane beach on the south-east coast is lightly visited and very peaceful — perfect for a long walk in shoulder season. The Taguermess lighthouse beach, overlooked by the island’s old lighthouse, combines maritime history with fine sand. Neither is equipped: no lounger rentals, no snack bars — bring water, towel and parasol.

Modesty, swimwear and private pool

Djerba’s public beaches are mixed. Most Tunisian women swim fully dressed or in modest swimwear; foreign visitors in standard swimsuits are also present. It’s up to each visitor to choose what feels right. For those who prefer to swim in full privacy, our villas each have a private pool screened from any outside view, enclosed by walls and privacy screens — you can swim freely with your family, without being seen. This is one of the main reasons travellers choose a Muslim-friendly stay in a private villa.

Combining beaches and a private villa — our recommendation

From Ethic Village Djerba, all of these beaches are within 20 minutes by car. During the day, you enjoy the sand and sea. In the evening, you return to your private villa with a screened pool, shielded from outside view, for a sunset swim or a dinner on the terrace. This balance — openness at the beach, privacy at home — is exactly what our travellers come for, whether as a couple, a family, or through a full-village exclusive rental.
