Wondering what to do in Djerba with kids ages 3 to 12 when the day swings between a morning at the beach, a non-negotiable nap and an afternoon outing? Here are ten trips our guests come back to year after year from our family villas in Tezdaine, each with a recommended age, the drive time and a practical tip so you skip the first-day missteps.
10 family-tested things to do in Djerba with kids
1. La Seguia / Lalla Hadria beach — shallow water, perfect for toddlers
Age: from 3 years old. Drive from Tezdaine: about 10 minutes by car. Price: free. Tip: go in the morning. The wind tends to pick up around midday.
2. Djerba Explore — crocodiles and the Lalla Hadria museum
Age: from 4 years old. Drive: about 20 minutes by car (along the Midoun tourist road). Price: entry ticket paid on site (reduced rate for children). Hours: 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tip: aim for late afternoon to catch the crocodile feeding. The Lalla Hadria Museum of Islamic Arts, on the same site, easily fills another hour.
3. Camel ride at Sidi Yati
Age: from 4 years old (with an adult). Drive: 6 minutes by car from Ethic Village Djerba. Price: agreed directly with the camel handler on site. Tip: head out early. Morning rides are calmer and the light is much softer for photos.
4. Pottery workshop in Guellala
Age: from 6 years old. Drive: about 30 minutes by car. Price: agreed directly with the craftsman. Tip: ask for a hands-on “wheel introduction” rather than a guided tour. It is shorter and far more meaningful for children.
5. Houmt Souk market — colors and spices
Age: from 5 years old. Drive: about 20 minutes by car. Price: free. Tip: bring small change and let each child pick out a fruit or a spice. That is often what stays with them the longest.
6. Borj Jellij beach — west-coast swim and sunset
Age: from 5 years old. Drive: about 35 minutes by car toward the northwest tip. Price: free. Tip: Borj Jellij is known for its due-west orientation and one of the most beautiful sunsets on the island. Arrive in late afternoon and stay for the sunset. Pack water shoes and a snack for the drive home.
7. Flamingo Island at Ras R’mel — boat trip
Age: from 4 years old. Drive: about 20 minutes by car to the port of Houmt Souk, then a boat crossing. Price: organized excursion paid on site. Season: flamingos are mainly visible from October to March (migratory birds). Tip: set off early in the morning and favor the off-season if your kids are really coming for the birds. In summer the sandbar is still lovely for a swim, but flamingos are scarce — a pair of binoculars makes a real difference if you have them.
8. La Ghriba synagogue and Erriadh village — murals
Age: from 6 years old. Drive: about 15 minutes by car. Price: free to wander the village; the murals are free to view in the alleys. Tip: walk through the Erriadh murals first — an open-air museum born from the Djerbahood project by Galerie Itinerrance — then finish at the synagogue, one of the key sites of Djerba’s UNESCO World Heritage listing. Modest dress is requested inside.
9. Taguermess lighthouse — east-coast walk
Age: from 5 years old. Drive: about 15 minutes by car toward the eastern tip. Price: free site access (exterior view of the lighthouse only — military zone, the interior is not open to visitors). Tip: pair the walk around the lighthouse with a late-afternoon snack facing the sea. The path is flat and easy for young walkers.
10. Early-morning fish market in Houmt Souk
Age: from 6 years old. Drive: about 20 minutes by car. Price: free (purchases paid on site if you cannot resist). Tip: arrive early to catch the traditional auction — a real show for the kids. Wear clothes you do not mind getting splashed; the floor is often wet.
