Djerba Airport Transfer: Prices, Options and Practical Tips

You have just landed in Djerba — or you are getting ready for your arrival. Arranging your Djerba airport transfer, from Djerba-Zarzis airport to your accommodation, is usually the first logistical task to sort out, and it can quickly become a hassle if you have not thought about it in advance. This guide walks through all the options available, their real 2026 prices and their respective advantages.

Djerba-Zarzis airport: what to know on arrival

Djerba-Zarzis International Airport (IATA: DJE, ICAO: DTTJ), also known as Mellita airport after the nearby village, sits on the western end of the island — about 9 km from Houmt Souk and roughly 20 km from the Midoun area, where our villas are located in Tezdaine (“the palms” in Berber). It is a modest airport but well equipped for the European airlines serving Djerba, including Tunisair, Nouvelair, Ryanair and Transavia.

A few useful landmarks on arrival:

  • The arrivals hall is compact and clearly signposted. After passport control and baggage reclaim, you step straight into the drop-off and pick-up area.
  • ATMs are available in the terminal. The Tunisian dinar (TND or DT) is the local currency — it cannot be converted abroad, so only exchange what you will actually need on site.
  • Several SIM card stands are set up at the exit. Tunisie Telecom, Ooredoo and Orange offer affordable data plans, very handy for navigation and Google Maps during your stay.

Djerba airport transfer options

Taxi

Taxis are available immediately outside the airport. It is the simplest option to arrange on the spot, with no prior booking. A daytime taxi to Midoun usually costs between 15 and 25 TND (around €5), including a fixed 4.5 TND airport surcharge and about 1 TND per large suitcase. At night (9 pm → 6 am) the meter runs at the night rate (roughly +50%) and the final price often reaches 30-40 TND. Ask the driver to use the meter, or agree on the price before getting in — which they normally do automatically, taxis at Djerba being rather honest, far from the scams of Tunis airport.

The journey takes about 25 to 35 minutes depending on traffic — Djerba is a compact island and the road is moderately good. Comfort varies depending on the vehicle and the route taken — either along the coast (longer but more scenic), or via Houmt Souk.

Private transfer

This is the option we recommend, especially if you are arriving with family or with luggage. Ethic Village Djerba offers a private transfer service to and from Djerba-Zarzis airport, starting from €20. The driver waits for you in the arrivals hall with a sign bearing your name, the vehicle is reserved for you, and the fare is agreed at the time of booking — you pay nothing on the spot, we take care of paying the provider directly.

Car rental

Several rental agencies are represented at the airport (counters inside the terminal). It is a relevant option if you plan to get around the island regularly during your stay — Djerba is easy to navigate by car, roads are reasonably good and distances are short. On the downside, picking up the vehicle on arrival takes a little time (paperwork, inspection), which can feel tedious after a long flight, and prices are unfortunately quite volatile, sometimes varying depending on the customer’s profile.

Ethic Village Djerba also offers a car rental service that can be arranged before your arrival and delivered directly to the villa or to the airport — a practical alternative to the airport agencies that spares you the hassle.

Public transport

There is no regular airport shuttle to Djerba’s tourist or residential areas. Shared taxi lines (louages) run from Houmt Souk, but the airport itself is not conveniently served for a tourist with luggage. This option is not practical on arrival.

Car rental: when it is worth it

If your stay lasts more than 3-4 days and you want to explore the island at your own pace — beaches, markets, villages, museums — renting a car is useful. Djerba is a compact island: you can go all the way round in a day. Roads are in good condition, signage is sufficient, and traffic remains manageable outside the high season.

On the other hand, if you plan to stay mostly at your villa, the private transfer on arrival and departure is plenty — but if you want to go out a bit, to the beach or surrounding restaurants and activities, a car becomes essential.

Ethic Village Djerba can arrange the delivery of a rental vehicle directly to your villa or to the airport — the simple, no-surprise option.

Practical tips for a smooth arrival

Currency exchange

The Tunisian dinar cannot be bought abroad — you will need to get it on site. The airport ATMs work well and offer fair rates but charge a fixed fee of around 10 TND per withdrawal. You can also exchange cash at the terminal’s bureau de change. Plan for a small amount in dinars for the first purchases (small purchases, snacks, etc.).

Local SIM cards

A local SIM card with a data plan is an investment of a few dinars that makes life far easier: GPS navigation, restaurant searches, communication with your hosts. Tunisie Telecom, Ooredoo and Orange have stands at the arrivals exit. Data plans are very affordable compared with European rates.

What to anticipate on arrival

  • Keep your passport accessible (not at the bottom of your suitcase) for entry control.
  • If you are travelling with children, control queues can be long in high season — be patient.
  • In case of a delayed flight, let your transfer provider know — if it is not us — as soon as you do (we track your arrival in real time with our internal app).
  • The airport is air-conditioned, but the walk to the car park can feel intense in summer — be ready for the heat as you leave the terminal.
